Hi, my name is Michael.

My interest in MT is from a general systems/ systems science, AI perspective - I think I came here because of a post in the Tessier Ashpool group. I don't really have any credentials, my interest is primarily amateur (although I'm aspiring towards gaining more knowledge in systems science) so I don't expect to be posting that much. I'm interested in the process of taking knowledge/information and incorporating that in a useful way in a system; I think the best analogy for that I've seen is the phrase 'from knowledge to wisdom'. So there is some relation to epistemology and semiotics in this approach. There is a fiction book 'Focault's Pendulum' by Umberto Eco which I have yet to finish reading, but I believe it deals with gleaning 'meta-information' from texts etc, and somehow being able to use this knowledge for a greater understanding of the world/processes etc. (but it is a fictional work).
That's me more or less.

I try to periodically check who's showing "computational linguistics" as an interest, and I don't recall seeing this community on my last pass. I'm a grad student in computational linguistics at San Diego State University. My BA is in linguistics, and I still feel like an utter novice at things computational, so I thought the more exposure I had to discussions having to do with them, the better. Computational ranslation is still pretty mysterious to me. It was not a focus in my course work, nor will my thesis come too close to it, but I'm still a linguist, so it's important. :)

I'm a soon-to-graduate compling undergrad student, also working in a little multilingual dialogue system research project at a major university in Finland. I've no practical experience with MT research or development, but I'm always eager to learn something. Thanks for the invitation to the community!
